Couples ski trip to Vermont! 1/22/2012

Shannon and Jason, recently engaged, met us in Killington for a weekend of fun on the slopes. We had an unspoiled mountain view while staying at The Summit Lodge & Resort - the St. Bernard dog as their mascot.
It was an interesting mountain since blues turned into greens or blacks and vice versa.  I was used to skiing blue runs from the top to the next lift but that was not the case here.  Of course, the pregnancy made me overly cautious any route I took.  Instead of experiencing the adrenaline rush of flying down blues, I slowed my pace to ensure safety as my first priority.
We had 3 inches of fresh powder when we woke up Saturday morning.  The day brought continuous flurries which made skiing enjoyable….until our dear friend Jason took a spill from his snowboarding jump and severely sprained his hand/wrist.  At least it happened at the end of our first day, he was a trooper.
Sunday morning at breakfast, the weather report showed 1 degree Fahrenheit – yikes!  Luckily it warmed up to 20 degrees by 11am when the sun warmed up the air.  Since we didn’t have the fortune of overnight snow, the slopes felt icy around many of the turns.  I was not happy when Jon took Shannon and me down a course that had been closed that morning – the small ravine and ice-covered rocks made for an interesting ride.
The Mountain Dew X-Games brought Shaun White and his snowboarding clan to the mountain that weekend - luckily they were competing or watching other snowboarders do tricks on the half pipe instead of the slopes we were leisurely skiing.

We brought home Vermont syrup and a wonderful weekend of memories J

Gramercy Tavern Experience 1/14/2012

Our first Michelin star rated restaurant: Gramercy Tavern
10-course seasonal tasting menu.  Executive chef: Michael Anthony
Last night (date night) at Gramercy Tavern was exquisite - our palates experiencing a roller coaster ride of tastes!  Our favorite savory dishes were the halibut and duck dumplings, the desserts were plentiful  1)  pear, chocolate mousse with pistachio ice cream 2) coconut mousse with star fruit and mango sorbet 3) gingerbread truffles with cinnamon sweetened sesame seeds, 4) pettifores of 3 flavors

During our 3 hour dinner, we randomly sat next to a friend’s co-worker unbeknownst to us….I overheard a conversation that described someone I knew (and hung out with last weekend) and told Jon about this.  He then put together the connection, as he had met the guy a few years ago in Durham.  You never know who knows who wherever you go in NYC.

Thank you Lauren and Cody for a thoughtful Christmas gift card here – it was the perfect excuse to check out this raved-about restaurant J
